recently.
It was our friend Cutie T’s first time in the PDX so we wanted to stay in a central area, park then walk everywhere. We chose Kimpton Hotel Monaco Portland

As you can see, the hotel’s entry is elegant from the outside and… magnificently opulent inside. It reminds us of old gallant hotels for the rich riches but not gaudy or tacky.

Everyone was warm and friendly. Check-in was fairly quick, as we were pre-paid.
As soon as we got to our room, the front desk texted us to say if we needed anything, just let them know. We needed extra pillows, blankets, a straightening iron, suggestions for a night out… and they got back to us!
Elevator and walk to to the room was delightful.

This King Suite was sumptuous!

Yes lots of areas to park your sweet booty.

Large, airy, light. Shower, tub, lots of counterspace.

The king bed had a sliding door with a huge TV, dresser, comfy chair, night tables with lamps and plenty o’ plug ins. The bed was fabulous firm. I didn’t feel Kells move around at all. In the evenings, the three us snuggled up with snacks and the TV.
Cutie T preferred to sleep solo on the sofa bed. She had her own TV. Mattress looked a bit thin but Cutie T slept fine curled up in the mountain of blankets and pillows.
King bed had large windows with sheets and blackout curtains. There were some floor ceiling and table lamps. Seemed a bit dark in the foyer but who cares.
Room felt very airy, due to the vaulted ceilings.

Mini bar, intimacy kits, snack items and room service are available for additional costs.
Included in-room are animal print robes, landline, basic drinking glasses, bar fridge, hair dryer & delicious toiletries. Other things available upon request (such as Keurig, tea, cutlery and coffee pods).
There were 2 TVs. TVs don’t have internet or bluetooth capabilities. There is cable with pay-per-view options.
With resort fees, you can use the fitness room.
Coffee, tea, swanky hot chocolate in lobby in the mornings.
Wine, beer, amuse bouche are available every evening 5-7 pm for all hotel guests. They also have live music in the lobby.
Concierge service also available by text.
Valet parking was included in our package. But we were close enough to walk everywhere downtown.
]]>Yes we absolutely recommend it.
Nals and Kells went on their annual October birthday girls getaway. This time, they flew to Palm Springs, and stayed at Marriott Bonvoy Indian Wells
.
Kells has been there a few times already. But this was Nals’s first time.
Kells’s review is here

Fantastic Staff
Vanity* got us a lovely newly reno’d mountain view room (on a side that wasn’t going to get construction done on the following day – how thoughtful!). Staff are kind and respectful from front desk, valet, bell hop, pool staff & wait staff.

Construction warning
After 30 years, this joint is getting a rehaul! So, there is noise & water-stoppage 7am-4pm in certain areas. We had a room on corner so hardly heard construction. There was some noise when in commons. The in-room water disruption was: some coolish shower water on day 2 (despite using the hotel’s techniques), odd noises when flushing the toilet & turning on shower water for first time. When we were at the pool, we were unable to use the bathroom** in the fitness/pool area. Otherwise, minimal disruption.
Overall Impression
Hotel is huge with lots of nooks and crannies to explore: bar, restaurant, ballrooms, fitness centre, stores, spa, parking area, hallways, outdoor seating area with evening firepits, outdoor fountain, lawns, lagoon, …and the errant roadrunner.

Fitness Room
Note that the fitness room is available with the resort fee.

Pools
They have 3 pools. 1 for kidlets with a faux beach (& beach toys). Bar (with loungechair service) available. 2 small hot tubs. Plenty of lounge chairs. Towels available at pool.

Poolside service
Service by Joel was friendly and non intrusive. Nachos, Corona and the BLT (with avo & turkey) with fries were delicious!

Our Room
Our room had a balcony, loveseat, small glass dining table & chairs, TV, double sinks, fabulous pillows, comfy AF mattress, hair dryer, Aveda toiletries, mini fridge and Keurig. They supplied coffee & tea pods, condiments, paper cups and water glasses.

We missed . . .
There is no cutlery, mugs or microwave. We would’ve liked a bit more counterspace and dimmable lighting.

Recommendation

Rooms are huge. Renos are lovely. Hotel is large but warm. Staff are fabulous.

We would absolutely stay here again.
Footnotes:
*Vanity surprised us with a lovely handwritten birthday card, a chilled bottle of champers and a plate of unbelievably delicious chocolate-covered strawberries.
**Canadian term. American term is “restroom”. You will be made fun of if you call the crapper a “bathroom” in the USA.

The Okanagan, which is in BC’s interior, has a mild and humid continental climate.

There is something to do for everyone from outdoorsy stuff like hiking and water sports, R&R’ing, winetasting (also beer and ciders), eating locally-grown stonefruits, festivals and simply enjoying the scenery.
So as per usual, the spontaneous Mr doesn’t book ahead, which leads me to do it last minute’. So the well-priced rooms, funky finds, one-of-a-kinds are probably gone! However, I ended up finding accommodations at UBC.

Whaaaat?!! Accommodations at a university? Yes indeed folks.
It’s the cold hard truth.

G e n e r a l I m p r e s s i o n
We were in the Queen Studio room** in the Monashee Residence*. It is a straight-up clean room with no bells and whistles. No fancy soaps, luggage racks, room safes or artwork. There was a double bed, a desk, table & chairs and full kitchen. The bathroom had a narrow shower stall, with sink outside. They provide towels, kitchenware and very basic toiletries. It felt dorm-y but also home-y. There are tons of pictures available on their website and from other reviewers.

T h e P r o s

T h e N o n – P r o s
There is no in-room TV or telephone so bring your own electronics. There isn’t a lot of counterspace.
Sink & toilet were slow to drain (perhaps just in this particular room). Showerhead is not adjustable (problem for short or tall poppies).
The bed was a bit small. (We are used to Queen.) It was also not supportive so whenever the Mr flopped, I felt it. The pillows were flat.
There weren’t extra pillows or blankets. This was major for me because sometimes I’m a bit colder or want more pillows.
P a r k i n g and Transport
Parking is 50% discounted for guests. Parking options are close by. During summer it’s slow. But during the school year – likely a different story.
If you want to sight-see or pick up larger grocery items/clothing, you will need transport: a vehicle or take transit (stops on-campus).

S u r r o u n d i n g s
Surroundings are beautiful and serene. UBC Okanagan sits on top of a hill so you get a great view of the city. There’s a bit of green space for hikes (be mindful of the bear warnings).
On the other side of highway, there’s permanent housing, a little convenience store, liquor store, pub and Chinese restaurant.
R e c o m m e n d a t i o n
The whole point is to sleep well in a hotel room. And we didn’t sleep well on the first night”. But, if we stay overnight in Kelowna again, I will ask them if there are firm-bed options. I love the idea of staying away from the downtown core in a beautiful setting, so I wouldn’t discount this option in the future. Also, UBC is the Mr.’s and my alma mater.

Footnotes:
* This building was assigned to us. There were several other options. Not sure how they make the allotments. Maybe based on room types? Length of stay?
** If we had booked ahead, our options would be greater . I see there are king beds available. Not sure if mattress quality is the same?
‘ He doesn’t like to be tied down because a better deal could be around the corner. Or, maybe something off-the-beaten path. Read about our last-straw Portland adventure here … which we didn’t book ahead but turned out pretty good.
” For the following night, we slept well because we were so zonked.
Lately I have been here there and everywhere (unfortunately without my side kick, Nals). We both love love love to travel and quite honestly, I’m pretty darn sick of staying in hotels.
So a few years ago I started using AirBnB/VRBO.
it, and add it to a list. You can have lots of lists and get to name them yourself. Don’t over add to your list. You will use this list to narrow down your search. I have 3 things I use to add to my list.7. Finally, once you have a few keepers in your list, start comparing them. Read the descriptions well. I often find things hidden, like if there is no TV, or if there is a cat that lives on the property. Things that you may or may not want. You may also discover that the place is a carriage home just off the main area of the owners house, and that they will be sharing space with you. This is also when I read through the reviews. Try to read some that don’t give the property all 5*. Other guests are good at pointing out things that you may have missed. If there is something that you don’t like about the property, delete it off your list. I try to narrow it down to 2 properties. Then I will message the hosts about any questions I have, like what’s the parking like? or are there any condiments in the fridge?
So far, all the hosts that I have had, have been amazing. They answer all my questions, communicate well and have been super helpful with anything that I have needed. I’m sure most people have used AirBnB at this point. But if you haven’t, it’s important to remember that the hosts will also rate you. Their comments are seen by other property owners. Things happen, sometimes glasses break and accidents happen. It’s good to let the host know these things. Don’t forget, to follow the instructions for when you leave. Every host has a different set of rules. These help the cleaning staff, as well as others following you to enjoy the property after you leave. My rule, is to treat the property as it is my own and if I were the host.
Finally, if you are staying at a property for a week or more, try asking the host for a deal. They are often willing to discount if you need to stay a while!
Leavenworth Village Inn is nestled in Leavenworth town, with the same quaint Bavarian as all other buildings. Suite was clean, spacious and luxurious. Note that there is no elevator.
The story goes… Kells & I jetted off with Cutie T for a Girls Weekend in February. We decided to say at Leavenworth Village Inn.
We’ve now stayed in the King Spa Suite twice. We went about 3 years ago with our buds DJ Cocoa*.

Sofa bed wasn’t comfy for lil Cutie T. So, we all 3 spent a lot of time watching TV on the king bed. King bed was super roomy & comfy AF! Kells is tall & I’m a big gal but we had lots of room… enough for Cutie T & then some!
Bathroom was huge with a wardrobe, and no tub. That’s cuz the bedroom had a huge jacuzzi.
Kitchenette had microwave, cupboards, sink, mini fridge, dishware°.
Main area also contained a little dining table with chairs, Cutie T’s sofa bed**, TV & mmm toasty fireplace.
There was lots of lighting and windows. There’s free wifi.
TV doesn’t connect to bluetooth so you won’t be able to listen to your music or watch your Netflix. Counterspace & tabletop space is sparse.
LVI is easy to book online. They have a reasonable cancellation policy. We would recommend looking into bookings early… in case there is an event going on.

N&K would most certainly recommend Leavenworth Village Inn. It’s centrally located with lots of parking.
Footnotes
*We can’t forget this trip! DJ was glued to CNN during the Trump v. Clinton thing.
° You’ll need to contact the front desk for cutlery.
**DJ Cocoa took the sofa bed last time. And this time, Cutie took the sofa bed. Unfortunately it had a part that dug into her tiny back. Though they advertised that the sofa bed was use-able, they seemed surprised when we told them it was being used. So, we would suggest you ask them to check the sofa bed BEFORE you arrive. As it was a busy time of year, we had no option to change rooms or hotels.

General feel
SkyCity Hotel has a lofty, brightly lit, sparkly feel with huge chandeliers and a marbly lobby. Our floor was carpeted for reduced noise, but felt expansive. There were a few places to sit, in hallway outside of elevators.

Our room
was Kingsize. It too was lofty, with warm colours. Windows are huge almost floor-to-ceiling. We were on 4th floor & got dizzying views. (Views of construction, but still dizzying.) They had blackout drapes and it was quiet due to the double-glaze. There was plenty of lighting options.

The bed

Soooo big and firm. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel Mr. Nals rolling around in middle of the night. (He’s littler than me, but is like a heavy log when fast asleep.) This bed looked perfect for jumpy pillow fights. There was also a glorious multitude of pillows.
The rest of the room

There was a nice little seating area with a loveseat that could fit 2-3 folks.
The desk was a good size with stationary and hotel info.
In-room entertainment
There is a large TV with variety of channels, wifi, lots of places to plug chargers. There might’ve even been a docking station.
Comforts
The hair dryer was proper. It wasn’t that useless hunk of plastic secured to the wall. There was an iron with the board. They had a Keurig-type machine with coffee/tea/hot choco. Mugs, wine glasses and tumblers were provided. There was also a bar fridge and microwave. And inside the closet was a delightful little safe.
Bathroom was spacious with toiletries. We didn’t have a tub but shower was spacious. And there was a fabulous rainshower head!

Hotel Entertainment
Skycity Hotel has tons to do like the Skytower, a casino, conference rooms, a cafe and a couple of restaurants. They also have a fitness room.

Parking
There is self or valet parking for ~50NZD/day. But as it is downtown, it’s easy enough to catch the train (or bus) or use your legs for transport. We also saw motorized scooters zipping about town.
Tips
– Don’t put e-keycard near your phone so you can avoid de-magnetizing the keycode.
– lots of construction going on in Auckland so ask for a room with a nice view.
– within walking distance of restaurants, cafes, liquor stores. I will be posting on local cafes & restaurants soon.
Does Nals recommend Skycity Hotel?
It’s in Auckland’s Central Business District (aka CBD but not to be confused with this other thing) so it’s a central location. Reasonable rates, easy to book and check out. Quiet and luxuriously comfortable.
So hells yeah!
we’d stay here again
in a heartbeat.

Our Vegas reviews of: Yellowtail Olives Ballys
due to our work schedules and my limited vacation hoursÂą, we decided on a mini Run for the Border birthday getaway. Our sole goal was shopping. (So much shopping that we needed to spend a night.) We decided to grace Skagit Valley Casino Resort with our presence.
Kells has stayed here several times before, including a Suite. This time, we were in the Ridge Double Queen.
The hotel was large, spacious, clean, airy.
Rooms were decorated in muted tones. Â Beds were super comfy: firm but soft (ie: not lumpy). Pillows were snuggly soft. There was a lot of tabletop room. Â And a little sitting area. Bathroom was large and well-lit. Hot water took a bit to come in but when it did, it stayed. Rooms were quiet.
In-room amenities: Lots of toiletries including facial-cleanser wipes, TV, hair dryer, coffee & machine, little fridge and microwave. In fact, we would call this a kitchenette area because there was also a cute little sink.
Hotel amenities: pool & fitness room. The lobby has a lovely fireplace for the cold days. Staff are lovely. And they have a continental breakfast room. Plenty of free guest parking. Of course there’s a casino. And as per their website, dining rooms and actual shows like the upcoming Clairvoyant Christmas². The surroundings are green & woody. So a lot of rooms lookout on this. We took pictures out there, and ended up seeing deer!
We would defo stay here again!
Footnights
1 Oh dear limited vaca days? Poor Nals! Well don’t feel sorry for me. I’m going to NZ next month!
2 Important things to consider when travelling with others: are you a neat freak, does the other person snore, is someone a blanket hog, who’s crabby in the morning til they get their coffee, what do you like watching on the old boob toob?
]]>I’m a planner. He’s more of a spontaneous duckling. Who says planning is all the rageÂą? So we didn’t book a hotel. We winged it.
We ended up taking the turn-off into Beaverton and found a place called Shiloh Inn. Looked chalet-ish, with a pool. But wouldn’t you know it – it was ALL booked up!Âą
The front desk chicka suggested Peppertree Motel. This was casual, motel-style, low key. There was a little water feature in front & lots of guest parking.
pool with loungers and tables, fitness room and breakfast.
were clean and large enough, & included toiletries, a fridge and microwave. Our first 2 nights, we stayed in a king room which was great. It was on the non-parking side (& thus, quiet). Our last night was in another room with 2 doubles, a non-stop bathroom buzzing and faced the busy pool.
not a lot around within walking distance. A 15-minute walk will land you near a mini strip mall with a Latin market (with a bonus cafeteria section where you can order ready-made Mexican foods), pizza parlour, etc.
Not the greatest here. Yes I said it. Deal with it.
I typically drink strong homemade stovetop espresso in the morning². Americanos are my best bet. Even if on acidic side, it is usually drinkable.
→Coffee at Peppertree was umm… not quite right-tasting. But I got my quota of caffeine.
→COFFEE AT 23RD – drip was too acidic. Had to chuck it.
→Case Study Coffee – decided to switch to Americano. Better.
Funky cool inclusive streets with artisan shops, cafes, restaurants, knicks, knacks and paddy whacks. Reminds us of Vancouver’s Commercial Drive with a soupçon of Kits.
The Grotto (>1 hour)
Heavenly gardens showcasing a sheared cliff. No caves in sight.
Lan Su (<1 hour) is a gorgeous Ming Dynasty era garden, in partnership with the Chinese province of Jiangsu.
Washington Park (1-4 hours) contains various attractions such as Portland Japanese Garden, which is 12-acres of authentic J garden in 8 vignettes. Fair warning to the differently-mobiled. There are stairs and inclines heading up to the gardens. But plenty of seats to take a load off PRN.
Freaky But True Peculiarium Museum (<1 hour) Hmmm hard to describe this odd collection of riff raff except to say… it’s odd… riff raff-y… fascinating and not for kidlets or the feint of heart.
Portland Aerial Tram (<1 hour) transports one from city’s South Waterfront district and the main Oregon Health & Science University. As the tram rises 500 feet high, you get amazing views of the city. Semi-surreality takes over as you step off into the expansive movie set of what they call the OHSU campus. Not an intended tourist attraction, but check it out if you want.
Don’t forget to take a peek at South Waterfront area (<1 hour). It’s a lovely little bit of Porty greenery.
You MUST check out the best rack in Oregon: Nordstrom Rack (1-4 hours).
When I used my credit card, a receipt was emailed to me (if the merchant used FourSquare).
Portland is apparently the bike-friendliest city in Amurrica.

Biking is so popular, you can do it while you have a beer with a bunch of randos.
Footnotes:
1 Yes of course I pulled a “told you so… we should’ve booked something”. This was the 2nd (& last year of “winging it”.) Yes, honey, prepping is all the gd rave.
2 I use dark or medium roast like Kicking Horse’s Kickass or Grizzly Claw. I also like Ethical Bean Bold Dark Roast.
3 Recommended time to allot to this attraction, depending on your interests, mobility abilities, photography, if you’re going to chow down, transport, etc.

lashes because she uses some new serum called EyEnvy. Nals assured me that this sweet coworker of her swears by it. So when I saw it in the store, I bought it. I was a wee bit shocked by the sticker price, but I thought Nals would never lie to me. Plus, I could try it, then review it for you all!
Funny thing is, I bought it back in November, did some Mascara Mondays and then 4 months ago (after our trip to Seattle), I started to use it. Yup, that’s right, it took me 2 and half months to open the package and start using it.

The instructions were simple, put it on your lash line, once a day for 3 months. After 3 months, do it every second day. Well, that’s easy enough…just gotta remember to put it on. But I did good. Keeping in mind that I want to make sure I do it right, so I can assure all you that I used it every day (with only a couple of times forgetting). I honestly can’t remember my start date. Thinking back, I should have written it down, but I know it was shortly after our trip to Seattle in January. So for argument sake, let’s say mid Jan. And roughly about mid-April, after coming home from Palm Springs, I went to using it every second day (just like the instructions say).

All I gots to say is:
Boom! It’s alllll Natural baby!

I’ll be honest, I was not expecting much. In the past I have tried others. One from Shopper’s Drug Mart (it was so long ago and didn’t work, so I don’t remember what it was called) and the other was Rapid Lash, for about $50, that I picked up at Costco. Also, I didn’t think that it worked.
But this EyEnvy didn’t take long for me to start seeing results. I actually picked it up when I was in Edmonton (of all places) at this Spa, located in a gardening center that was hosting a Christmas market. Yah, I know right? Talk about random. I was shopping with my sister-in-law and saw the 2ml bottle for $85! Yikes! But I said to my S-I-L that this stuff was supposed to be amazing so here goes nothing. Honestly, I should have looked around for a better price but I hadn’t seen it anywhere else so I just bit the bullet.

The serum comes in 2 sizes, 2ml and 3.5ml. I originally bought the 2ml but just picked up the 3.5ml bottle for $99 at Onyx. However, I just saw the smaller bottle at Spa Utopia for $70.
I used to love getting lash extensions, but I found:
1.They were hard to maintain and keep clean
2. My natural lashes started to fall out
3. It got expensive
So yes, the price of EyEnvy seems a bit steep. BUT I can say it worked for me and 2. it’s a whole lot cheaper than extensions and fills.
Do I recommend this product?
You better believe I do!
And if you are wondering, EyEnvy did not pay me to say that! But I mean if they would like to, I’m all for it. Will they? Highly unlikely, they’ve already made money off me!

Also, for the before and after pics I have here: you may recognize the before picture because it was from one of the Mascara Mondays titled the Ultimate Boom! So, just to be fair, I used that same mascara to shoot the EyEnvy results. I also tried to do my makeup the same, that way no one can say it was the makeup or mascara that changed it. Unfortunately, my photography skills aren’t on par…so the angles aren’t prefect.

I would love to go there yearly…even monthly. Again, life doesn’t allow for that to happen.

. Sun. Warmth. Pool. Shopping. It’s all there.
Are definitely the hikes. Pick a direction and you will find a great hike. Through the hillsides or along a river bank. I recommend 1000 Palms, a flat walk through a desert oasis. Or the Bump and Grind or Cross Hike for a good workout with wicked views of the city.

Well can’t say there are any. I will say both times I’ve been there were in spring, April and May. May was hot…just right really. And April was windy. At times super windy…especially at night.
